Habitat Vietnam and MFAT Facilitate Residential Plot Allocation for Disaster-Affected Families in Lao Cai

Habitat for Humanity International in Vietnam (Habitat Vietnam), in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Bat Xat Commune, successfully organized a Residential Plot Allocation Draw Ceremony at the Lao Vang resettlement site on December 23, 2025. This event marks a significant step toward providing safe and secure housing for ethnic minority families affected by disasters.

The ceremony is part of the project “Enhancing Disaster Resilience and Climate Change Adaptation in Lao Cai Province” implemented by Habitat Vietnam and funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT). Through this project, 24 households are receiving support to rebuild or repair homes damaged by disasters. To date, 05 homes have already been repaired, while 19 families relocated to Lao Vang have now selected new plots. Families participating in the draw ceremony have committed to begin construction immediately and complete their homes in two months.

As part of Typhoon Yagi recovery efforts, the project is also rebuilding a community evacuation center for the local population, providing a safe space during emergencies and a venue for social activities. Beyond construction, families gain knowledge and skills in WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), safe housing, and settlement planning using PASSA (Participatory Approach for Safe Shelter Awareness). They also receive training on healthy housing, asbestos risk awareness, and hygiene practices, ensuring long-term safety and well-being.

By the end of Q1 2026, an estimated 1,400 people will benefit from safer housing, improved sanitation, and stronger disaster resilience, restoring security and dignity for vulnerable families and building a more resilient Lao Cai Province.
