Safe Water and Hygiene Practice for 500 students in Mekong Delta

Name: Tan Trung Primary School (main building)
Number of students: 500 (263 boys and 237 girls)
Address: Ong Non Hamlet, Tan Trung commune, Go Cong Town, Tien Giang Province

Tan Trung Primary School has total of 1,030 students (in which there are one main block and four secondary blocks) and 62 teachers. The main block of Tan Trung School has 500 students, including 263 boys and 237 girls. The school latrine is very old and unhygienic – it has only two stalls for boys and two stalls for girls, which is not enough for 500 children, especially during break times.

The aluminum hand washing sinks at the main block of Tan Trung primary school was in very poor-condition, rusty, damaged and ragged. Due to limited financial resources, the Go Cong Town Department of Education doesn’t have any funding for new latrines or to install proper handwashing systems for the students. Thus, they longed for the support from donors and NGOs. Due to their urgent need, Habitat Vietnam selected Tan Trung Primary School for the construction of a new handwashing sink. Through the generous donation by TTI, two handwashing sinks were built for student use at the main block of Tan Trung primary school.

The principal said “We thank Habitat for Humanity Vietnam and Techtronic Industries for helping us installing these two handwashing systems to serve all students at the school. Especially in the COVID-19 epidemic, this is of great significance to all 500 students and our teachers. We continuously remind students to wash their hands before entering class, to ensure the proper prevention against the COVID-19 epidemic.

Nguyen Thanh Ha, a student at the school shared that “We like these handwashing stations so much, they are very clean, easy to use, unlike the old one that were falling apart and dirty”
